Grateful Heart: 2014 | 16h Thoroughbred mare

Sourced as a 2-year-old from local thoroughbred expert Sabrina Morris, Grateful caught Katie’s attention as an event prospect following an unimpressive racing career. In Grateful’s young life, she quickly proved her talent as such, beginning her competitive career in the USEA’s Future Event Horse series, earning top scores all year, and culminating her in-hand career as the Champion 3-year-old Filly! Recently, Katie and Grateful have campaigned up to the Preliminary level nationally and the CCI2* level internationally in eventing. Katie describes Grateful as a blast out on cross country and simply an amateur’s dream partner. KWE Horse Hall of Fame

Mr. Indiscretion (Trip): 2000 | 16.2h Thoroughbred gelding

Katie describes Trip as coming into her life booming with typical redhead energy- a little dramatic at times, and very sure that he’s the best out there. However, with lots of patience and time, Katie and Trip worked tirelessly together to reach the Advanced-and CCI3* level in eventing. Some career highlights include completing the Richland Park CIC4* and the Fair Hill International CCI3* twice, where they were the top Maryland rider in 2015. Katie looks back on Trip’s career, reminiscing on a horse who loved his job and tried his heart out each time they set out on course. Three years after battling EPM, Trip’s current job consists of enjoying the retiree life and as her son, Nico’s, best friend.

Miss Texas: 2006 | 16.1h Thoroughbred mare

imgTexas

Every barn needs a princess, and Texas has taken on this role with pleasure! Trained by racehorse trainer Tim Tullock, she suffered a racing injury while training as a 2 year old. Knowing that this filly had more in her future than just racing, Katie was gifted Texas. This mare quickly progressed through the levels in eventing before Katie decided to breed her to well-known eventing stallion BFF Incognito. In 2014, Texas had BFF Alias, who Katie owns in partnership with BFF Incognito’s owner Lisa Reid. Since having her filly, Texas has taken on the role of schoolmaster for Katie’s students.

Digger: 1990 | 16.2h Thoroughbred gelding

Digger, holds a special place in both Katie’s heart and story as the horse who started it all. A homebred of Packy and Judy McGaughan’s Banbury Cross Farm, Katie bought him as a 4-year-old while working with Packy. Digger and Katie conquered their career together, campaigning at both their first Preliminary, Intermediate, and Advanced level in eventing. Katie describes Digger as being the ultimate teacher – very demanding, but also very forgiving. Katie remarks that even as he entered his 20s, Digger still seemed to be in charge of everything at the farm. Digger was peacefully laid to rest in May of 2021.

A Normal Fling (Jeffrey): 1998 | 17h Thoroughbred gelding

effrey takes the honorable title of Katie’s cherished heart horse. Following a brief career at the racetrack, Jeffery hit a rough patch at the beginning of his life when he was all but abandoned at a woman’s farm. After finding him through a friend and being impressed by his handsome stature, Katie wrote a check for $1,000 and took him home for some TLC. A natural, Jeffrey did his first novice six months later and never looked back. While he was a tad mischievous, Jeffrey is recalled as one of the most well-behaved horses of Katie’s career. He was a definite momma’s boy and liked nothing more than a long afternoon nap in the field. Tragically, Jeffrey shattered his ankle just as he was getting ready to move up to Advanced. After a successful surgery, he returned to work for an additional three years as a school master for Katie’s students. Sadly, Jeffrey suffered from colic in the winter of 2012 and was humanely euthanized. Katie reminisces on her time spent with Jeffery as a ‘simply lovely animal’ who helped build her confidence and was lucky enough to call a best friend.
